DAModder

DAModder

A replacement for DAUpdater — and more!

Update: DAModder has been released! Read below for more information.

DAModder is designed as a full replacement for Bioware’s “DAUpdater” program. DAUpdater is designed for players to easily install Bioware’s DLC content, and is available to be used to install 3rd party modules as well. However, while DAUpdater is a nice little utility, it doesn’t work well enough as a full mod installer. DAUpdater’s main flaw is that it does not have the ability to un-install mods. In addition, as modders have become more experienced and mods have gotten more complex, several additional issues have surfaced. Some mods need to install files into the games main “core” override, yet DAUpdater can’t do this. Also some mods are now actually configurable by the player, but this currently requires hand editing of an INI file.

DAModder was designed to address all these issues in one easy to use, solid installer, designed for both players and builders.

For Players

  • Easy installation of all mod types
  • Easy un-installation of all installed mods, even those installed by DAUpdater
  • Quick access to mod information
  • Easy to use graphical UI for configuration of mods that support configuration through DragonAge.ini
  • Robust & secure backup system to protect your game files and settings
  • Localization display mod data in your native language when available

For Builders

  • Easy packaging of mods for release — in a format that can be used either with DAModder or DAUpdater
  • If your mod is configurable through DragonAge.ini, you can easily setup configuration options for the player
  • Automatic creation of readme files if desired, with information pulled directly from toolset data, makes for less work come packaging time

Beta Update & Release Information

DAModder is now in Open Beta and is available in two versions. The Stable version is available for download on Dragon Age Nexus, and is the most polished version. If you just want to use DAModder and don’t care about helping to test new features, then this is the version for you. The Open Beta version is available on the DAModder Support Site, where the beta is managed, and is the version updated most often. New features will be introduced into the Open Beta version first, and then migrate to the Stable version over time. You choose which version is best for you.

In either case, if you download and like DAModder, please consider Endorsing it on Dragon Age Nexus, as well as voting for it as the file of the month. You will need to actually download the file from Nexus before it will let you do this.

How Much Does It Cost?

DAModder is free, and always remain free. It is released as “Donation Ware”, which means you are free to use it forever without paying a cent, but if you like the program and think its a great tool that is worth a few dollars, please consider donating to Beyond Ferelden to support this site, bandwidth costs, and to encourage continued development of all the great toys I make here πŸ™‚

Special thanks to Alexspeed for the banner, and to all the closed beta testers who really helped iron out all the bugs. Thanks gang!

    Sent a small donation to show my appreciation for the work you’ve been putting into this and your tutorials. Truly, the DA Modding community will greatly benefit from your continued endeavors and I hope you get all the encouragement you need to make this a phenomenal tool to rival the great Wyre Bash.

    As an aside, I’m not sure if this is the place to ask this, but where do you recommend going in terms of forums that discuss DA Modding? I’ve looked at the Nexus and Social Site, but can’t seem to find any substantial builder discussion. Mind linking to where you get the bulk of information and feedback which supports this blog?

    Cheers

      I visit two sites on a regular basis, Dragon Age Nexus, and DAMods. For forums, DAMods is much better IMHO. http://www.damods.com

      @Faiella

      Please use the support site as indicated in your welcome email. The beta is not “public” at this point and anything to do with the beta should be on the support site.

    Great work you are doing here! I have been following along with your tutorials and I am grateful for your efforts. I made a mistake and downloaded an armor mod from “Dragon Age Nexus” because I didn’t want to take the time to do it myself and now the cutscenes stutter. Of course, I disabled the mod through the downloadable content section of the game, but I would prefer to just uninstall the faulty mod and then do it right myself, like I should have in the first place.

    Are there any instructions for uninstalling mods? Or is it so complicated that I need to have your program to do it?

    I don’t know how much help I could be in beta, since I am not a programmer, but I would certainly be willing to report any abnormalities that I find. As I said, I am not a programmer, but I can modify examples to make things work, usually. I was able to follow your item creation tutorial and modify the script to use my naming choices without issue.

    If you are not in need of my lowly beginner skills, I completely understand and will just keep following your blog and tutorials while waiting for the DaModder release. Cheers!

        @alexspeed75
        Thanks for the guide! That was easier than I thought it would be. You just have to keep track of the opening and closing commands sort of like HTML with and for example.

        @John
        Thanks for allowing me to join your beta!

    As DAModder can uninstall I guess it “knows” which existing files a new mod changes/overrides? Would it be possible to integrate a view in DAModder, showing which files are changed/modified by a certain mod? That would be very helpful when checking if new installed mods will conflict with existing files not based on a mod package (e.g. self written M2DAs and so further).

      Compatibility features are coming for DAModder. I’ve been working on enhancements to the core mod manager to make room for some planned compatibility features.

    I would be forever grateful to anyone who can answer this question. I just recently started playing Dragon Age Origins. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy this game. I have gone on You Tube and seen some of the great Mods that have been done. I downloaded the ToolSet into my computer but I haven’t the faintest idea how to do some of the things I have seen on You Tube. I would like the capability to change the eye color, the romance scenes, the wedding at the end of the game. Can someone please answer this and give me some information as to what can be done. I am no rocket scientist but I would like to customize this game. Thank you for your precious time. Sincerely, Joanne Rowan P.S. I have the game on my PC
